About this reading circle
Reading Circle Modernism Ghent is a new reading club in Ghent that focuses on the artistic, literary and intellectual culture of 1860-1950.
The goal of the reading circle is to create a forum where those interested in this cultural period can engage in conversation with each other, focusing on a specific work. While reading may be a solitary activity, reflecting together on what we've read helps broaden our understanding and can ensure that the works become a more meaningful part of our own development.
The reading material will be broad: both works from that period and works about that period; both literary works and non-fiction; both canonical works and peripheral works; both Western and non-Western.
The Reading Circle is open to anyone interested in Modernism; no prior knowledge or expertise is required.

The plan is to meet every two months. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening, March 26, 2026. This first meeting will focus on getting acquainted, making arrangements, and compiling a preliminary reading list. The language of instruction will be Dutch or English, depending on registrations.
